Mini World Tour

So, with the reorganization announcements complete, both my old boss and my new boss took some vacation time.  I thought I should follow suit.  I took a half day on Friday, plus Monday and Tuesday.

Friday at noon my girls picked me up from work and we headed to Philly for the day.  The first fun fact that we learned was that Kraft and Nabisco had buildings there.  My girl Nurys was way excited and we changed the tagline for Philly to "The Land of the Oreos."

Then we drove by the "Rocky Stairs."  They are at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is also the confusing land of roundabouts and no parking.  So, we did the drive by tourist thing before heading to test what Philly is named for.  No, not a broken bell.  CHEESESTEAKS!

Luckily for us, the two most famous cheesesteak spots are literally across the street from each other (with a bar in the middle).  After a spot at the bar for a ladies room break, we started at Genos.  Their options are type of cheese (Provolone, American & Cheez Whiz) with or without onions.  I had provolone cheese with onions and was not impressed.
After Genos... Bring on Pat's

Boo Genos!

Then we headed across the street (yes, right afterward, don't judge us) to Pat's.  They have more options, like peppers and "pizza", which means they add red sauce.  I had another provolone with pizza and peppers and onions.
Before
After
In case you are wondering, yes, I ate the bread.  I figured since I was only in Philly for one day, I would break all the rules.  My friend Nicole on the other hand, (who just lost 20 pounds woo hoo!)  Brought her own wrap and pretty much wasted a perfectly good loaf of Italian bread.
Good job Nicole!
Nurys was loving Pat's too!
After all that steak, we headed in search of frozen yogurt, but wound up a cute gelatto shop.  After we tried every flavor, I got a small chocolate banana/nutella cup which I ate with a spoon made for little people.

Oh spoon, why are you not bigger so I can eat more faster?
In an effort to work off all that food, we killed time doing tricep dips and yoga poses throughout the streets of Philly.

Then we started towards our final destination and real reason for heading to Philly for the day.

Jordan

Knight!

Yes, Jordan Knight from New Kids on the Block was performing in Philly and we thought it was worth the trip.  We also met some cool chicks including Lydia and Missi, who had traveled there alone via bus from Boston.  She has lost over 120 pounds so far and she is writing a book about her journey.  When I have more information on that, I will definitely share it.

I got home about 1 in the morning and tried to get some sleep.  I went to obstacle course bootcamp at High Rock park the following morning.  It's a free training program from Next Level Performance for the High Rock Challenge, which is a physical and mental race/challenge in Staten Island later this month.  I am not participating in it, but I do have an obstacle course challenge scheduled for 6/30 in Brooklyn.  The sessions are great and I hope to try out the gym some time soon.

Sunday, we had a Palm Sunday lunch with Mom and her hubby since we won't see them on Easter.

Monday, hubby and I headed to Atlantic City for a 24 hour mini vaca.  It was actually the first time in six years that we went away together without kids.  We stayed at the Harrah's which was amazing and amazingly cheap for a gorgeous room on a random Monday night.

Best indoor pool ever (and not only because no kids are allowed)

Morton's Steak House for dinner - I guess it would be wrong to have a cow on the tables.

All in all, a really great weekend!

When was the last time you just went away on a random day?  What is your go to spot for a mini-vacation?

  1. Looks like you had a fun-filled weekend! Atlantic City looks like a good time. When I went to college in VA I had a friend from Philly that hipped me to the cheesesteak, I have to say they are definitely yummy!
